I just want to say how proud I am of room 17 for all of their hard work so far this year. They are learning about how to leave a comment and I am so pleased to see all of the positive messages coming in. Thank you also to parents, other children from Botany Downs and our friends for reading our blog and leaving a comment. Please continue to do so.
Thank you
Miss Wright

Problem Solving
Today the maths group Ice Beam had a problem solving activity which involved making a pig pen out of iceblock sticks. They had a great time working out how many 'planks' they needed. Looks like the pigs have a safe place to live.

Our Earth Hour Lantern
Together we visited the Earth Hour website http://www.earthhour.com/ and made a class lantern. It is pretty cool.
It's time to think about our planet....
At 8:30 PM on Saturday 26th March 2011, lights will switch off around the globe for Earth Hour and people will commit to actions that go beyond the hour.
With Earth Hour almost upon us, our thoughts are with the people of Japan during this incredibly challenging and sad time for their country.
日本の皆さん、勇気を持って頑張って下さい
C.C said this is Earth's 'happy hour' and I agree with him.
We discussed ways we could help during Earth Hour and came up with a list
- use a candle or a glow-stick instead of electris lights (only with mum or dad)
- turn off your lights
- use a lantern or torch
- use a battery night light
- turn off the computer at the wall
- turn off the t.v
- turn off all unused electrical things (only if mum or dad say so!)
- play hide and seek with torches
- have sparklers (with mum or dad)
- play spotlight
- read a book with a torch
- play a board game
- have a picnic outside
- have a party with the neighbours....
We hope that you will all join with us for one hour on Saturday and help to make our planet Earth last.

The Massage Circle
We have been talking about touch this week and we all decided we love a massage. We sat in a circle and all gently tickled and massaged the prson in front of us. We are going to do this every Friday afternoon as it is a lovely way to finish the week and say goodbye to each other. We also only use gentle hands because we don't want to hurt each other.

Using adjectives
Today we talked about making a sentence more interesting by adding adjectives/describing words to a sentence.
We started with a simple sentence and added some words to make it sound more exciting for the reader.
The cat sat on the mat.
The pitch black cat sat on the mat.
The pitch black cat sat curled up on the mat.
The pitch black cat sat curled up on the fluffy orange mat.
It makes a difference don't you think? What can you come up with? We will post the best!

Our Emotions
In Keeping Ourselves Safe we have been learning about our feelings (emotions) and what makes us feel each way. We have looked at what makes us feel happy, sad, angry, confused, proud and scared. We learned that it is ok for boys and girls to cry and to be angry but only if we don't hurt ourselves, others or property (things).
Miss Wright read out a scenario and we decided which emotion it would make us feel. We then made a face to represent that feeling and glued all the little stories around it.

When the ground shook
Mr Hayward found a link to a blog that has been put up for children from the Christchurch earthquake. It is all stories about where children were when the quake hit. We thought it may be very interesting to see and share.
Please visit this site and leave a positive comment for these brave children.
